"One of the international trademarks of the Reggio approach to education is the way that Reggio schools document the process of the students' and teachers' work. What the schools of Reggio Emilia have done with documentation is the most innovative look at making the learning visible. By documenting our work we create a powerful legacy of work to be viewed and a powerful tool for our own professional development. The concept of making the learning visible carries with it a number of audiences. It is not simply a matter of photographing the students while they are involved in a particular activity; it is collecting their work and experiences in as many media as possible and then looking at these to see what emerges for the benefit of all the adults and children involved."

To this end, documenting the children's learning, as well as our own, is a critical piece of our work as educators. Around the classrooms, you can find traces of what we are learning and how. Hopefully, it is obvious that our role is not to give "instructions" to the children, but to follow their lead when it comes to what they are curious to learn more about and partner with them along these journeys. This documentation can also spark the people involved to think deeper about the work taking place. When we reflect on images of what has previously occurred or read over our past conversations, the direction to take next might become more clear to us and the children. In addition to the reflection it inspires, documentation also invites "outsiders" to chime in and add new layers of collaboration to these processes of learning. While you may not have been physically present in these times, taking a close look at this documentation connects you to them. We hope it gives you a sense of pride in the things your children are capable of, inspires you to keep the conversation going at home with them, encourages you to see things differently, and maybe even empowers you to share your own thoughts and join us!
In addition to creating our own documentation pieces and panels as Curriculum Specialists, we also heavily support the teachers with theirs. We work closely with them on this journey: conceptualizing their pieces together, dialoguing about the moments they have captured or stories they want to tell, editing their work grammatically and for content, challenging them to try something new, and finally posting the finished products in the classrooms or online for you all to see.
We invite you take a look at recent documentation and classroom newsletters from the Cloud Room, Star Room, Sun Room, and Moon Room on their classroom pages. Check back often, as we create new documentation monthly.
ARE YOU TRYING TO VIEW DOCUMENTATION ON A MOBILE DEVICE?
In an effort to ease your documentation-viewing, there is no longer a mobile version of this website.
Also, only five documents are posted on each page to ease loading, but please click on <<Previous down at the bottom to go back and browse our history of posts from this school year.
Finally, look for the "pop-out" icon in the upper right hand of a document. Clicking on it will open the document in a new window where you can change the orientation and zoom in and out as you like.
